The House Whisperer

Interview with Dorena Kohrs, a House Whisperer.

Dorena Kohrs is a House Whisperer (not a typo…HOUSE Whisperer). She uses a variety of modalities to guide your discovery of what you are holding onto in your home living space that may be holding you back in your daily life. Since we are all spending more time at home, I connected with her and did this interview to find out more…

MG: A horse whisperer is a person who creates an honest energetic connection with the horse and supports the animal in the process of building trust and relating to people. Do you do something similar with houses?

DK: You could say that it’s similar because people who call me say they feel like something is “a little off” in the house. That is an energetic awareness. Looking at your home is like a peek into the subconscious. The patterns I see in your home help me identify what is going on underneath the surface. Patterns in the home are a reflection of what is going on in your life. The home tells me what we is happening unconsciously for the person. It boils down to one thing. Your house talks to you and tells you something is ‘off.’ I take that information and help you clear both physical and energetic blocks that are holding you back.

MG: What types of things motivate people to give you a call?

DK: It is kind of a chicken and egg situation. For example, a person will call me because they are struggling with a particular color in the house. I’m wondering if there is something about the color that doesn’t suit the space or something about the person that has caused them to feel some sort of conflict with the color. Usually within the first 10 minutes of looking at the space we discover what is showing up. Sometimes there is a connection to a habit or something that is related to a history of always having things in a particular way. There are always reasons for habits. Once we look into the pattern and make some adjustments, the house feels better and the person feels better too.

Another common reason that people reach out is because they feel stuck. For example, I recently worked with a client who was feeling stuck financially. There was room full of things that belonged to a partner who had recently moved in but hadn’t finished unpacking. The client was feeling stuck around money issues and it turns out the space with all of the unpacked boxes was in the money area of the home. This was an obvious resolution.

Sometimes it is a little more subtle. I had a client who was divorced and remarried who felt like something was interfering with the new partner connection. We discovered a painting in the bedroom that had been completed with the ex-partner. Although it looked good in the space, it was disrupting the nurturing energy the client had been seeking.

MG: When you evaluate space, how do you factor in the energy of other family members?

DK: So many people have preconceived notions about pointing fingers toward another family member when something feels ‘off.’ The truth is, when you are pointing a finger, there are three pointing back at you. As the old saying goes, the only time you can change someone is when they are in diapers. The best thing to do in this type of situation is to lead by example. When a client resolves the one single thing that is holding them back, sometimes the 50 other nit-picky things that annoy them about the family will end up resolving too.

It is always about the power of the energy of things that ends up breaking up the stuckness in a home. It might be one tiny thing, but if that tiny thing has the most energy in the space, it can have the biggest impact on the solution.

MG: Pets always seem to have something to say about the environment when I do animal communication sessions. Are pets a part of your process? Tell me about an experience where the animal companions in a household have influenced the work you are doing with the people who live there.

DK: Pets are a part of the process when they make themselves known to me or when a person brings them into the conversation. When the pets make themselves known, I watch their behavior and see if it is potentially mirroring in the energy of the house. What are they telling me about the space and the person? It’s not so much about helping people find the best place to put the dog bed, however if the bed is in a space that blocks an energy that the person needs to resolve, it will be unsettling for the person and the pet. The pets come into the conversation like breadcrumbs that lead to important information. Pets provide another piece of information that tells me more about the person and the space.

MG: Do you think there is synergy between house whispering and animal whispering?

DK: Yes. They are both parts of the systems and resolutions of root issues. We don’t create a problem where there isn’t a problem. We look at systems and patterns. We look at how these patterns create the same outcomes over and over again. House whispering is about patterns and clarity. It’s about literally changing your life. I want to make a difference in the comfort and daily emotional satisfaction in your space, just like a horse whisperer wants the animal to feel comfortable and satisfied with his human partner. You can’t go deeper if you don’t open the door.  You have to trust yourself, trust the process and trust me to hold the space and help you experience your story with grace and create sanctuary in your space.
